YOUR FILESNO SERVERSNO SUBSCRIPTIONS

Coming soon to Android 10 and newer. Free.

What it does

A folder of files, turned into a library.

Point Penumbra at the folders that hold your films and shows. It recognises every title, fetches its artwork and plays the original file exactly as it is. Nothing is moved, renamed or converted.

01

A library worth opening

Official posters, backdrops and title logos. Continue Watching, Recently Added, collections and favourites, laid out like the streaming services you pay for.

02

Recognises your files

Messy names like Dune.Part.Two.2024.2160p.WEB-DL.mkv become Dune: Part Two. Episodes find their show, season and number on their own.

03

Plays the original

Direct play with your device's hardware decoders: 4K, HEVC, AV1, 10-bit, and HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG where your screen supports them.

MKV · MP4 · WEBM · TS

04

Subtitles, your way

Embedded and external subtitles, picked up automatically. Change size, position, font, colour and background, and Penumbra remembers your choice for every show.

SRT · ASS · WEBVTT · PGS

05

A player that gets out of the way

Swipe to seek, double-tap to skip, edge swipes for brightness and volume, pinch to fill. Pause and the screen settles into the film's title and when it ends.

06

Wherever your films live

Internal storage, SD cards and USB drives. Made for big tablet screens, at home on phones, and it keeps your place across everything you watch.

Honest by design

It tells you what's really happening.

Most players show a badge because a filename says so. Penumbra reads the file, checks what your device can actually decode and display, and tells you plainly. No guessing, no fake badges.

Principles

Yours, and only yours.

Your filesPenumbra only reads the folders you choose. It never moves, renames or changes a thing.
No serversNo account, no cloud, no media server to set up. Everything happens on your device.
OfflineOnce your library is set up, artwork is kept on the device. Planes included.
PrivateNo analytics, no ads, no tracking. Nothing about what you watch leaves your device.

Questions

Good to know.

Is Penumbra free?

Yes, completely. There are no ads and nothing locked behind a payment. If you love it, you'll be able to support its development, entirely optional.

Which devices does it run on?

Android 10 and newer phones and tablets. It's designed first for large tablets like the Galaxy Tab S10, and adapts to phones.

Does it stream from Plex, Jellyfin or a NAS?

No, on purpose. Penumbra plays files stored on your device, its SD card or a USB drive. If your films are on your device, Penumbra makes them beautiful.

Where do the posters and details come from?

From The Movie Database (TMDB), downloaded once and kept on your device so your library looks the same offline.

Will it play everything?

Penumbra plays what your device's hardware can decode, and tells you honestly when it can't. Today that includes 4K HEVC, AV1, VP9, H.264, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG on capable devices, with common audio formats including Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus. Support for more audio formats is on the way.

Where will I get it?

Right here. Penumbra will be available to download from this page, and it updates itself from within the app.
